I've only used foundation brushes, my fingers, & sponges to apply foundation but I heard that stippling gives a better effect, I'm just unsure how to do it. Help me, beauties !

Watch this video, it's very helpful. I know he posts here too, but I'm not too sure what his user name is.

Anyway, his other video about "Do you stipple and swirl?" I am so guilty of. But now I know.

Also, you can do a stipple effect with makeup sponges. It doesn't necessarily have to be with the beauty blender, the pink little egg looking sponge, you can use a regular triangle makeup sponge. I learned this by watching Mandy K.'s foundation routine. If you go to her blog, you can see what she does. But for the most part, I think she wets the sponge, and squeeze out any excess water using a paper towel. Then she "stipples" the foundation on her face.

Stippling is like dabbing your face, verses dragging the product around your face via the stipple brush, or sponge.

Hope this helps. =)

You're going to need either a domed synthetic brush, a duofiber stippling brush, or a flat top buffer brush.

Some of my favorite examples of each:

domed: Sephora airbrush #55
flat top: Sigma f80
stippling brush: MAC 187

Of these, I most prefer the Sigma F80. I usually spray the head of my brush w/ a little bit of fix+ and then distribute the drop of foundation on my finger evenly amongst the hairs of the brush. Then I dab it across one section of my face at a time: left cheek, right cheek, forehead, t-zone, chin/jaw.

After I finish dabbing it as evenly around my face as possible on my left cheek, I will use a buffing motion to swirl the remaining foundation on my skin for an even finish. Repeat as necessary on surrounding areas of your face.

This technique is best for those w/ oily skin, since buffing can enhance any dry flaky skin w/ micro exfoliation. This is easily remedied by making sure you maintain a well exfoliated face and moisturize.

Hope that helped!  =)

These are really helpful. Thanks for the question and the input! I have also recently tried stippling and it gives a very even coverage. Who knew tapping on foundation could work so well? I use the Coastal Scents stippling brush, which in my opinion is just okay. Saving up for the MAC 187. Ah, if only they sold Sigma brushes here.

Hey Shayla, in the mean time, if you have regular makeup sponges, you can practice with that. =) Then by the time you get a brush, you'll be a pro!

But make sure you "wet" them... I think that's the trick (having the sponge 'expand')! Then 'stipple'...

Go for the Sigma synthetic face kit! It's the BEST deal for brushes I've ever come across - and they definitely hold a special place amongst my high-end brushes. I'm so amazed I even received 3 well made brushes for the price I usually am willing to pay for one quality brush! I *heart* my F80!

I absoulutely LOVE my stippling brush from Sigma! It makes your foundation go on so smooth you look airbrushed! I got the whole Make Me Crazy kit and it literally makes you crazy.... Crazy GORGEOUS!

That video was the perfect explanation! Kudos Jane for linking us to that!

I got Samantha Chapman's stippling brush from Ulta & I heart it. I used Revlon colorstay for combo/oily skin in Caramel 400, here's a pic !
