okay so I have never in my life dyed my hair any color, it has always been a dark brown. I feel that since I have been wanting to go deep/vibrant red since I was twelve, that I should do it for my 17th birthday that is coming up in a month. I want my hair to be the tone of Ariana Grande's, it's the perfect shade. I would love to go to a solon and have them do it, but since I dont have a job or allowance I feel this is all I can afford.
So I was wondering if I can acheive doing that with box dye and not having to bleach my hair?
Is there a certain brand that anyone could recommed?
Could I combine like an auburn red and splat red?
Has anyone else had this problem?
Has anyone done this?(if you have could you post pictures of before and afters on you profile?)

I want my hair to be this red when i barely do it

Do you have any advice on what colors to mix? or any box dye brands?

The dye you should use is Loreal's Hicolor! It's amazing. They have tons of different shades and types of red.. the dye is specifically for dark hair, and it lifts the hair like a bleach would, but without the hassle of bleach. There are tons of youtube videos on it and reviews online. It's a great dye for what you're talking about!

My hair has gone from blonde to black and allll the way back to super blonde- so I've become really familiar and comfortable using bleach and dye!

It appears from your pics that your hair is pretty dark- so if you put color on top of your natural color it will saturate your current color and probably just give you a red tint, but not the bright vibrant red it seems you're going for. To get that, you have to lift the pigment out of your hair with bleach and then replace it with the red. It's really not that scary if you want to try it.

Here's how I bleach my hair:

1. Kaleidocolors in NEUTRAL (one or two packets depending on how long your hair is)- a lot of people will tell you to get the blue powder but I've found that blue sucks, takes forever, and have had seriously better results with the neutral. I will seriously never use the blue again after finding this!

2. pure white 40 volume creme developer 16 oz at least for long hair

3. A glass bowl (bleach can corrode plastic so make sure it's glass or sealed enamel)

4. A salon style application brush - looks like a mini plastic painter's brush

5. Gloves- bleach will burn your hands and leave icky white patches.. unless you want to wash your hands a lot during the process I'd just wear the gloves.

6. Hair clips so you can section off pieces while you work.

and 7. Manic Panic's Vampire Red- I'd get two jars so you can get full, even coverage.

Ok, so the thing about bleach is that you have to mix it properly (1 part powder to two parts creme solution) and you have to work FAST. You don't want half of your head Ronald McDonald orange and the other half Big Bird Yellow...

If you have a friend that you trust and you know he/she can do a good job putting the bleach on, then great, have them help you. I do it myself all the time and I don't have issues covering completely.

I start off by flatironing my hair so I can get the bleach on evenly and then by sectioning off my hair in six sections (like three sets of pigtails). Kind of like how you'd do your hair if you were going to curl it all.

Start at the bottom with one inch strips of hair and paint the bleach on, leaving 1/2 inch from the roots. Really saturate the whole legnth of the strip of hair, all the way to the tips. Work fast and use a mirror if you need to so you don't miss any spots in the back.

When all of the hair is done go back and do your roots. A lot of people will tell you not to do this but you have to get the bleach onto them or-hello- they won't match your hair! I always start around my face, around the back of my head, and then quickly part and paint it on to the rest of my scalp.

If you're sensitive you will feel it burning. That's normal, but if you start breaking out in hives or something you need to wash it out asap! I would do a test strip after 20 minutes or so.

Wash the test strip out with water ONLY. I don't shampoo bleach out. I rinse it super gently with my head upside down in the bath with water only and then I condition right away with K-Pak REconstruct mask (i'd wait till after you rinse out your COLOR to do the conitioning step though). Once you rinse go take a look in the mirror. Color on wet hair looks different from dry obviously but you'll be able to see any crazy spots you might have missed. Mix up some more bleach and cover those bad boys up... rinse out and check again. Good thing for you, you're going to cover it all so it doesn't need to be totally perfect- I'd just make sure it's pretty even or the spots might show through your red.

AND since you're going bright red you don't even have to bother toning the orange/yellow out! Time to color!

Blot out as much of the water possible but don't rub your newly bleached hair or use the blowdryer. If it's a teeeeeny, tiny bit wet the color will still penetrate the hair. Section it off similarly to when you bleached and slather on the color. Follow the directions on the tub and I'm sure you'll be happy with the results!

For aftercare I am a freak about masks/conditioning. I'll go days without shampooing and just use a claryifying conditioner at the roots, pile on coconut oil mixed with a heavy duty conditioner on the rest and then rinse it out. I use CHI Keratin mist every single day and if I'm going to use a curling or flatiron I use a heat protectant. Once you bleach your hair it's going to need a LOT of extra TLC....

Here's a pic from manic panic's website from a girl who used Vampire Red... GOOD LUCK!!!

If it's your birthday coming up, why not ask your mom for a colour appointment at a salon for your present?

I really don't like recommending box dyes to anyone, especially someone who's never coloured their hair. Too much can go wrong, IMO, and I think it's one of those things that, if you don't know what you're doing, should be handled professionally.

I agree with Shelly T. in that if you're not confident that you can pull it off, then don't do it. Thankfully I've never had anything go wrong... but you CAN end up totally ruining your hair with this kind of process.

So even though I left that novel above about how to do it lol, here's this advice too: If you go to a salon do your homework!!!!!! Not all stylists, colorists, whatev are created equal and just because they went to school doesn't mean they can't ruin your hair too! I had a horrid experience with a "professional" that took nearly $300 to have fixed by a real pro somewhere else. From that day on I began to touch up my own roots, do my own color, bleach it out, etc..I've never looked back- or spent so little to have good hair ; P
