Cruelty Free Brands

So I am sure many of you saw Michele1218s video on how she plans to stop using companys that test on animals. It really got me thinking and I am going to try doing this too. I am coming into a problem though, I am seeing so many conflicting opinions on who is and who isnt cruelty free. So I am sure many of you out there are already doing this. Does anyone have any good websites to look at besides Peta?

As much as I love animals avoiding products that were tested on animals is a moot point when the vast majority of cosmetics are made from animals or animal products. If you want to avoid harming an animal then the best thing to do is NOT wear makeup of any kind or use any type of shampoo, conditioner, soap or other beauty product.

That said, if you want to avoid companies that test on animals you should also avoid companies that use animal products. Here's a huge list of products that are made from or derived from animal products:

I know Yes to Carrots is a cruelty-free brand, and Urban Decay is cruelty-free and mostly vegan (you can see exactly which products are on their site). I've heard ELF is a vegan brand, and reading their ingredients I don't see any animal-derived products, but I don't know anything about their ethics as a company. I believe I saw somewhere that they also are a cruelty-free brand.

I'm still kind of investigating this, since I don't plan on replenishing any of my products that contain animal-derived ingredients or aren't made by cruelty-free brands. PETA has a pretty extensive list of companies that don't test on animals, arranged alphabetically and by type, also noting whether or not they're vegan. http://www.peta.org/living/beauty-and-personal-care/companies/search.aspx?Product=5

You have to be really careful because some brands (Like L'oreal) say they don't test on animals but cannot say for sure that their ingredients they use (aka, source out to other companies) are not tested on animals.

It is some legal jargon that makes them look good on the surface, but just makes them as bad as anyone else.

(Ugh, PETA.)

e.l.f. is not vegan, to my understanding. Cruelty-free, yes; vegan, no.

The ones off the top of my head that are cruelty-free...
* Smashbox
* Revlon
* MAC
* Illamasqua
* NARS
* Too Faced
* Hard Candy
* Urban Decay
* Tarte
* NYC Color
* NYX
* Arbonne
* Avon
* mark.
* Sleek
* Bobbi Brown
* Estee Lauder
* CARGO
* Elizabeth Arden
* Make Up For Ever (I think?)
* e.l.f. (as I mentioned)

Sam and Nic of Pixiwoo have a list going; I've already mentioned some of the products on it...

(One side note: The Body Shop is owned by L'Oreal, whose animal testing policy is unclear.)

It should also be noted animal testing will be banned in the EU as of 2013.

realistically, everything in this world is tested/related/linked somehow to animals. as previously stated we'd have to give up all makeup to ensure this. i was a vegetarian for eight years. i guarantee we all have something in our homes that has a bit of leather, suede, wool, mohair, all of our brushes have some sort of animal hair in them [at least the decent ones lol] we'd have to live off seeds. you get what im saying.

it sucks, but its happening all the time. are we refusing to buy the makeup thats packaged in cambodia by kids making three cents? nah. so really i have no idea how to go about this. its so rare for a product to be cruelty free with all cruelty free ingredients, never tested upon animals, free traded, etc etc. sigh.

circle of life, i guess.

Wet n' Wild, NYX, Tarte, Urban Decay and Too Faced are some brands off the top of my head that are cruelty-free. Here's a website of companies that DO TEST on animals. (Be sure to note that some of these are parent companies that own several other companies that may not be listed, but also test.) http://www.astrostar.com/DO-Test.htm

Also, being cruelty-free and being Vegan are two totally different factors. One is just not testing, the other is not containing any products that came from animals (bee's wax, etc.). There are usually logos on companies homepages that will tell you if they are cruelty-free and/or Vegan. :D Hope this helps!
