Okay so i gave in and tried the weirdest make up/ skincare advice ive heard. Using milk of Magnesia to control oily skin. I bought the Phillips brand (unflavored of course) and applied it to my face after moisturizer and before my foundation. It did mattify my skin right after application, but within 10 minutes after my face started looking oily (like how my face would be oily after 4 hours). Anyways it got me sad that even the most recommended wierdest advice over the internet doesnt work on my very oily skin! Is there any possible explanation to what happened? or am I doing something wrong? Help please and thank you!

Milk of Magnesia is very very very drying to the skin. When you dry out your skin so much your bodies natural defense kick in and it increases the oil production (called reactive seborrhoea) this is why your skin was oily alot quicker then if you hadnt put the milk of magnesia on at all. Also if your doing it for reasons regarding acne and not just oily skin I personally wouldn't recommend it. Acne occurs when the pores are clogged. Milk of magnesia doesnt unclog those pores, in fact it traps the oil that is trying to escape in and clogs them even more which could result in worse acne then you started with. I would suggest that you stop using the Milk of Magnesia and find a good powder that works with your skin. I love the transulcent powder from mac and also Tarte's Smooth Criminal Tranluscent poweder possible paired with a matte foundation that wont have the sam4e drying effect as the milk of magnesia will. MUFE's matte velvet is my favorite matte foundation and i also have very oily skin.
All my personal opinions but hopefully it helps you!

Thank you for the very detailed explanation! :D it really helped a lot! I am not using it for acne though, just oil control, but since youve said it can clog my pores by trapping the oil i am definitely going to stop using it.
Oh and one more thing, do you know which MUFE matte velvet coresponds to the MUFE HD foundation? I have found my perfect shade in the MUFE HD but not in matte velvet :( Also can I use the MUFE matte velvet as my liquid foundation and set it with the MUFE DuoMat powder, or will that be too drying? Thank you again! :)

No problem glad i can help! I have never used the MUFE HD foundation so i cannot say how much the two correspond but i know you can go get matched at any sephora and if you still cant find a good shade in matte velvet try mixing shades. as for using both matte velvet and duoMat that would be totally your skins preference. You can always try it out and if you find that your skin is to dry or overly oily then it is probably to much for you but you never know it might be the perfect combination as well. I have never used the DuoMat powder so i cant really speak to its usability but i have heard good things about it...
Another thought... sometimes when my skin isnt being very nice to me in the breakout department i carry oil blotting papers with me and use those through out the day instead of a powder. Its an extra step yes but its also one less product to pack on your face. I know you said that you dont have the acne problem but just food for thought...

I guess i can stop by a sephora to get a foundation matching :) Oh and i agree with the blotting papers! though theyre expensive so i just usually use the brown paper towels we have at work and that works just as good! (i actually think it absorbs more of the oil than a single blotting paper can and its free)

well if your looking for a inexpensive way to get that oil off at work use toilet seat covers....i know it sounds super funny but they are made out of the same material as oil blotting papers also free and not as abrasive as the paper towels...seriously i use them all the time...lol just make sure they are not placed right next to the toilet dont want any splash on them lol....ewww that just gave the nastiest mental picture hahaha...anyways hope you have success with the matte velvet !!!

omg LOL i just had a really terrible mental picture of that! (i work in the hospital so it gets more gross hahaha) though i never knew the brown paper towels were abrasive, but then again i never rub them on my face, just pressing to get the oil off) :) and thank you!

Hello girlies!!
So i was reading your posts and i thought id share what i do.. I get seriously oily during the day especially around my t-zone.. forehead, nose, and chin area.. OMGGG!!! its like i rubbed olive oil on my face its nasty! jasmines explination of why ur facxe got oily very quickly was on tha ball. Likewise I always wondered if i can use toilet covers since they feel the same or maybe parchment paper.. ( the little paper they put on the pans before u put cookies instead of nonstick spray)
Personally, if you want to try the mattfy your skin so your foundation isnt shiny I use the monistat chaffing gel . it comes in s tube its the same thing as the mattyfing gel made by mac. I only use it on my t zone and alittle around the rest of the face. Also, I use this mattifying face moisturizer from Sephora its the Murad brand. its VERY thick and it works very well.. the only downside is that its around 20-30 dollars i believe for a tube. if u want to try a cheaper brand, try the mattifying products from clean and clear i believe. Its in pink packaging.
also try using face washes with glycerin in them.
hope this helps.. please follow!

MAC also has a mattifying cream called Prep + Prime Skin Refined Zone Treatment that I like i believe that is what Sarah is talking about it works pretty good but i find that i still need to blot during the day...but alot less on days that i use it then days tht i do not use it...and i have heard great reviews about the monistat gel but havent used it personally let me know how you like it if you try it out sabrinna...i would love to get my hands on that Murad mattifying moisturizer!!!! **runs to Sephora** lol

Oh thanks guys! i actually am using the whole Murad Regimen so i am using the Murad Mattifying moisturizer, but it hasnt really helped at any oil control at all but it does help with moisturizing which i personally love. Im interested in trying out the monistat (wow lol another weird one! only just cause the name monistat isnt something youd think you will put on your face, hahaha) and yes i shall let you know jasmine! :D
and Sarah does glycerin help with oil control? Also ive read in walgreens that witch Hazel help too, but havent tried it. has any of you did? Thanks again :)

glycerin when added to soap becomes an acid which acts as an acne fighting medication.. Even though u dont have acne it helps clean the dirt and oil which may lead to acne or pimples.
Try outting a tube of aloe vera in the fridge then put alittle on ur face.. that also helps.. but as a primer.. def the monistat chaffing gel. I use it everywhere though because i had large thighs so i put that in between to stop the rubbing bcz in the summer when i wear skirts.. omgg!!! my thighs feel like i can light a fire with them!! they get so red a hot because of the constant rubbing.. but the gel is great as a primer..plus it helps ur makeup go on soo much smoother!!! its great.. however i do find my face still gets oily during the day but not as bad as it does without any product..
To be honest.., the best way I think is to just use an oil blotting sheet like Jasmine said.. you dont want to over burden ur face with products.. try aiming for natural rememdies.. most products can be found in ur kitchen.,, it sjust better to take the reemove the oil then have mattifying stuff on it.. however i still like the chaffing gel as a primer.. lol.!! Witch hazel is great too.. thats usually used in toners and astrigents.. i believe the toner from Olay is made with witch hazel. thats the one im using..

thank you! I shall check if my murad cleanser has glycerin in it! lol and i do have acne problems :) but i never intended Milk of Magnesia or the Monistat primer to help with acne, just oil control. (murad has been really good at helping in reducing my acne and my foundation helps cover any scars) I shall run to the store tomorrow and try out the Monistat! hope it works! im excited! lol thank you so much guys for helping me out really!

update: i havent tried the monistat (though i already have it) as my skin isnt cooperating (meaning its currently breaking out in small bumps which is no fun!) and i dont want to use the gel until my skin calms down. will update again when my skin has cleared up. sorry for the wait!

@Sabrinna how did the Murad Mattifying Moisturizer work out for you?
Nov 19, 2011
Sabrinna S.
@jasmine: it never really helped with the oil control sadly, but it does help keep my face moisturized without feeling greasy compared to the Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion (i only use the Skin Perfecting Lotion at night as it does make my face a bit greasy after using it). So im still keeping the Mattifying Moisturizer hoping it will maybe reduce oil production in the long run. :)

ok im thinking im going to skip that one because i use the ddf oil free moisturizer and i love it...but i def wanna try that monistat stuff...just to see if its worth all the hype you know

okay :) yeah its better if you stick to it if it works! oh though i tried the monistat on my hand and it does dry to a matte finish.
I also recently found out about the Inglot primer, You may want to try that out :) Ive had it tried on my forehead when i visited an inglot counter recently, and i got home n my forehead was shine free. i got a sample but havent tested it again as my face is breaking out.
Right now I just compared it (on my hand) to the inglot under make up base and they feel the same when they dry. comparison: inglot feels heavier when i first applied it, monistat is lighter. in the ingredients the only two items they have in common is the dimethicone and the Cyclopentasiloxane. Inglot had less ingredients compared to the Monistat primer.
I cannot speak much for how they compare with controlling oil on my face as i havent done it for a couple of days though, sorry.

i absoultely love inglot products so i will make sure i try out their primer next time i go up there...or at least get a sample of the stuff! but its nice to know that the monistat and inglot are similar to each other im guessing those two ingredients are the ones that mke them mattifying

alrighty! :) if you get to try it before i do, let me know how it goes! (ive had not much luck with silicone primes i.e, lancome, MUFE HD primer, smashbox, but hopefully one of these two do the trick!) and yeah it could be those two! im crossing my fingers and hoping theyd work! :)

I couldn't read all the responses because I'm in a bit of a rush but Milk of Magnisa works okay...problem is people tend to use too much and/or use it all the time...this is not good. I recommend it's use only on big days like a wedding. I shake it up and put a thin layer on a cotton ball and swab it over the face. For anything else I would say use it once a week for ten - fifteen minutes like a mask. It sounds to me like you should focus on adjusting your skin care products a bit. Face washes, toners, scrubs and mask that are ideal for your skin type. Also considering finding a better moisturizer. The moisturizer you're using may be a bit rich for your skin type. Thus, the MoM was doing nothing but asorbing the oil from your moisturizer not stopping the oil production on your skin. I like gel moisturizers in the winter and my liquid Shiseido Edurmine (or however you spell it) in the summer months. If you were using MUFE HD I can tell you the product does not last on oily skin. Consider finding another foundation with a higher longevity. And toilet seat covers are my best friend. I am usually in a rest room when I notice I'm oily, they are large enough to blot the whole face in one press and best part is they are free. You have been granted the fountain of youth...embrace it. Do not try to dry your skin out because you will be sorry. I get my oily skin from my grandmother who will be 81 in December and has yet to get a single line or wrinkle in her face. Finally, I'm seeing you wrote something about silicone primers...avoid them, you have oily skin and silicone will make the makeup slide off your face...essentially. Hope that helps.

BTW Jasmine is right about the body trying to overcompensate by producing more oil. Which is why I said you may be using too much. But you dont have to fear about the clogged pores. Milk of Magnesia is essentially Magnesium which is a mineral used to clean up oil spills in the ocean. It does not clog the pore it soaks up the oil in the pores. you soak up too much too quickly and your body starts turning out more even faster.

Jasmine hit that dead on. I used to be so self conscious about the oils on my face, I would wash all the time like crazy and I never used moisturizer. I found after I began using a light moisturizer that the oil over-production ceased. I would recommend a water based moisturizer, and also do it right after you wash your face and tone. If your just simply going for a matte look, invest in a mattifying primer, or even a good powder foundation. Duo Mat by makeup forever is great!

@angel: oh, i never knew silicone + oily skin would make the make up slide off my face! thanks :) I guess i should change my skin care regimen and see if it works. Oh and i only used a light coating of the MoM and my face just got super oily after a few minutes :( though maybe MoM was just too strong for my skin, even though its very oily. (the only dry patches i get are the spots with pimples, rest of my face are oily)
@cameron: What other Moisturizers would you recommend? Ive tried that Clinique Moisturizing Gel but that didn't help much nor did I see any change in the oil production in my skin. Also what primer? :) Thank you! and Im currently using the Duo Mat, its helping control a bit of Oil. I guess
Thank you guys for the advice! :D

What kind of cleanser are you using? If your using a very stripping cleanser Clinique's Moisturizing gel won't work that well because their isn't enough moisture to recover what the cleanser took out. I use Cetaphil Cream, Clinique's Moisturizing Lotion, and at night time I apply grapeseed oil on my face. Neither of these broke me out, made me oily etc. For primer, I actually like Makeup Forever All Mat or Boscia's Skin Perfecting Primer.
