How to get wavy/curly hair without heat?

Here is my problem : my hair is half straight/half "curly" but my curls are not really curls (I don't Knowles how to explaining myself haha).
As they are really damaged and dry, I'd like to make them really curly/wavy but without curling iron (by the way, braids on wet hair doesn't work)

There's lots of ways
.t-shirt curls
.curl formers
.braid or twist out -try with a product
. Or good old fashion hair roller set lol.

I sleep with my hair in a French braid but not when it's wet, it has to be kinda dry and don't make the braid too tight either. It works for me and my hair is like yours. The bottom is curly but like the front layers are some wavy and some straight. Or you can wash your hair and let it air dry a little then use mouse to scrunch it up.

For me I use the headband method. I put the headband in my head and twist pieces of hair and put it through the headband like this:
