Lizine is sumthing you would take daily or when you feel like you might get a cold sore. n valtrex would b like when you already have it n your trying to get rid of it. I don't know just my educated guess.

They may give you medication, however, they sell over the counter medicine such as Abreva. Like Dacember said, you may only take it when you feel it coming on however, since yours is reoccurring they may prescribe valtrex or acyclovir (generic) to be taken everyday. Good luck, I know how bad those suck :(

They may give you the generic brand of valtrex which is called valacyclovor...excuse my spelling, but it works just as good as valtrex.

I take Valcyclovir (generic Valtrex) which is a prescription antiviral to treat the recurring flare-ups of HSV-I (aka cold sores or oral herpes). I can't take Lysine supplements for medical reasons, and my doctor said they aren't very effective at treating cold sores anyway because it is a virus that lives in the nerves under the skin. A good over-the-counter topical ointment is Abreva, it will reduce the severity and duration of the outbreak. However, only a prescription can prevent them.

Blistex will get rid of it if its just a cold sore, but get a std test to rule out herpes.

A cold sore IS herpes, Ty R. Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus I; it is a different strain than the STD genital herpes (HSV-II). 90% or more of the American population has HSV-I, it doesn't always cause outbreaks.
