I had the same problem, but then I started using cetaphil moisturizing cream & my skin is fine now. (: it's really thick, so a little goes a long way.

I had the same problem and I started using very exfoliating facial cleansers. Lush has some good ones like Angels on Bare Skin and Ocean Salt. The exfoliation helped a ton and then with a moisturizer it made it even better in my experience.

Dr Haushka clay mask and normalizing day oil. The mask comes as a powder, and if you rub it it when you apply and rinse it's the best exfoliatior outside of professional microdermabrasion that I've ever found. I've also had fantastic results with the Day Oil. A little goes a long way and it's completely changed the texture of my skin (poreless and perfect for the first time in my life!!) I had combo dry flaky/acne skin before I started this product. Give it a shot!

It sounds like you're experiencing dehydration of the skin. Make sure that you are drinking enough water a day - about 8 glasses. Also, you might want try a hydrating masque.
This is what I do when I experience the same thing:
I exfoliate really well with Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant (amazing amazing exfoliant)
I apply Dermalogica's Skin Hydrating Masque
Then I boil some water and put it in a bowl, and lean over the bowl and let the steam touch my face. Sometimes I even put a towel over my head to stop the steam from escaping.
Then follow it up with a moisturiser designed for dehydrated skin.
Good luck! And remember not to over exfoliate. This will only make the problem worse!

@Aleighnna, I just purchased the Ocean Salt and Angels On Bare Skin the other day since I had run out of my usual daily cleanser Let the Good Times Roll. I've only used AOBS once so far but I love it! It's a little messy like most of their facial cleansers but it exfoliates better than most other facial cleansers yet it's still really soothing and gentle feeling. The Ocean Salt is pretty amazing too, in my opinion. It smells awesome and the salt makes it a little harsh if you have acne, irritated skin, or cuts, etc. I suggest not scrubbing it into areas that are irritable but just gently rubbing it over them. I was told by the associate at Lush that you could use AOBS as an every day cleanser / exfoliater but only use the Ocean Salt every other day or every few days. I have to say though that after using both of them this week, my skin has never felt softer. :)

The girls have given great suggestions already :) I just wanted to add that you should avoid soapy cleansers because they tend to dry the skin. Also, if you're washing your face 2x a day, I would cut back to once at night when you're taking all the makeup off your face :)
