Sock bun with doughnut for long layered hair??

Okay so I got this doughnut and the first couple time it was fine, but now for some reason I can't seem to get it!! My hair is more than halfway down my back & it's got a lot of layers, especially around my face. How do I get it to look good without too many strands falling out?!?!? (Also, it's not a homemade one, so I can't unravel it like I've seen people do. My hair is fairly thick as well, so I don't think a sock would work.)
