Add mouse or styling wax to the roots and scrunch your hair when you've put it on, I find throwing my head forward then applying it gives you a lot more volume(;

I usually just keep a hair tie on me and when my hair is a little flat, I tie it up in a messy bun and leave it for ten minutes and then untie it.
