Lipstick and Lipgloss should be thrown out after a year and I'm pretty sure the same goes with eye shadow. Remember to always keep things clean, clean your brushes regularly to avoid bacteria.

I don't know about eye shadows, I've had my Mac ones for over 3 years and they still look, apply and smell the same. so that doesn't warrant any such action. lipsticks I know start losing their smoothness and most of all start smelling icky.

N foundation starts to kinda split once it starts getting old. and remember to watch out for skin irritation signs as well.
