Ok my hair was black during the summer and now that its fading there's brown spots on my hair so the black is fading. I dyed my hair today a dark mahogony brown and it got more on my roots and in some parts of my hair its still black but how can I go back to brown? it was really brown before I ombre'd it and just dyed it black. and I don't want to bleach it:/

Black is hard to take off. I had my hair black and webt for a light brown. it was more on my roots and some spots were still black :/ after 2 month I went medium brown to get it right.

Hm unfortunately there's not much else you can do aside from lifting the black color out with a lightener (bleach) of some sort since color cannot remove color, especially black. I totally did that too though And just had to wait for it to grow out rather than further damaging it.

@cristina A; did your hair end up a medium brown? did the black fade?
@Danyel N; so lightening my hair is still bleaching it?. before my hair was light brown it was black but I just remember dying it red and it went to red:/ and now it won't go no bleach was involved

Well it is sort of confusing but hair color can remove natural pigments only, so virgin hair essentially and can lighten it up to 3 shades usually depending on the hair and such. A lighter brown hair color cannot however remove any artificial pigment that was added by a black hair color...in order to do that, the lightener comes into play and that's a friendly way to say bleach really...although I'm not really sure if that's why you meant by your question hah did you dye your hair dark over the light brown? And is it naturally black or light brown?

Oh ok I see I guess I have to lighten it haha. my hair is naturally dark brown. I've always dyed it black until I was going into my freshman year the black faded and I dyed it a copper red and from there it was just brown

I used colour before. My hair was black. I used colour before once. And again a few months after. My hair still isn't the same colour because colour before made my hair go slightly auburn (which was my natural undertone) so if your natural undertone is blonde - you wouldn't go an auburn. In the summer I then used sun in. Once all over then on a few strands. My picture shows my hair now. Believe me. It was black. (:
