Help with red hair dye :)

I really want to dye my hair red, not a bright red but more of that auburn maroon red. My hair is a medium brown and I have dyed it before but I was wondering if I should go with a semi permanent dye or just go straight for permanent? What do you think and what tips do you have? Thanks!! :)
