Well if you don't use heat on your hair a lot then I think it should be okay with out but a DIY I know (but haven't tried) is mixing water conditioner and sunblock (again I have no idea of it works)

Apply 1/2 a dime size of coconut oil, olive oil, argan oil, or grape seed oil to your hair as a heat protectany
DONT APPLY TO MUCH OLIVE OIL OR GRAPESEED OIL CUS IT CAN MAKE HAIR APPEAR GREASY*

No as long as its applied on wet hair so, its kinda like putting a leave in conditoner, like if you put a leave in conditioner in your dry hair then 1 min. later you straighten it still sizzles.
