Def check out this video! How you do your eyeshadow depends on where your crease is.
This video shows diagrams of what shades to put where. It covers the 3 main eye crease types. It's very informative and will help you out a lot!

For smokey eyes you wanna focus on starting dark and going light
Apply a pencil liner to the lash line, and blend it out with a black eyeshadow, then blend the black with a brown, the key to eyeshadow is always blending!
