From what I've learned, the darker color has to go on the entire lid and from the crease it gradually continues to fade. Don't take my word for it. But, I'd have to respectfully disagree with Angel. I don't think those are smokey eyes. Again, don't take my word for it.

For a traditional smokey eye, apply a kohl black liner along the lash line then smudge it out with a black eye shadow, then use a coffee brown to smudge that out and a lighter brown over that, you're basically transitioning into your own skin color. I feel this looks quite flat though and I like the take where you essentially do the same thing, but start from the outer corner working inwards, and blending brown upwards. Kind of like the first picture angel showed
