Hi I'm a cosmetologist! black dye is extremely difficult to pull out so I would suggest going progressively lighter. try for a chocolate brown or a red first. dyed black hair pulls up pumpkin orange at first so wither of those colors would cover that pretty well. please see a pro for this though. from experience I can tell you that it is way too easy to over process hair when pulling out the artificial black dye. a pro will be able to best evaluate your hair and how much bleaching it can take while keeping its integrity.

Thank you for the advice Dina, I plan on going to a professional don't worry :) with the difference in color between the dyed hair and my natural I know I would never get it right. The color I put in my hair the last time wasn't supposed to be black, I went to Sally's and got a dark brown and the red intensifier but it came out pretty much black for some reason :( no red to it whatsoever. My hair used to be extremely damaged from over processing with boxes dyes and I have worked very hard to try and keep my hair healthier, now I either go to Sally's if it's something simple or go to my hairstylist. Do you have any pics of a color that you would suggest I go for?

I'm a believer that anyone can rock whatever color they want, as long as the undertones are right for their skin tones so really anything is possible. the exact color is really going to depend on the condition of your hair and how well the artificial dye pulls out.
the best way to pick a color is to consider your life style, how much time do you want to devote to your hair a month, or week? some colors require more work to keep them vibrant. like reds are very persnickety, they won't leave when you want them to and don't stay as bold when you want them to. reds mean cold showers, all over color toning once a month, ect.
what color line they use makes a big difference too. some lines are better then others with keeping reds red, longer. your stylist will know the strengths and 'weaknesses' of their color line and how that would blend with your life and come up with something that suits you best. unless you go in there with a set mind of which color youd prefer I'm confident that your stylist will pick something that will be right for you.
