Is helps slim of 'sink in' your face. Usually you use it on your cheeks to get a more defined cheek bone and on your nose to make it look slimmer :)

Oh I almost forgot. You usually use a bronzer or a foundation a couple shades darker than your skin.

Can greatly enhance the structure of your face and add definition.
when you put on all your foundation primer and face makeup it gets rid of any natural shadows, so like Janie said you usually use a bronzer but to pretty much make it look like your cheekbone is sticking out more:)

Contouring is used to create light and shadows on the face using bronzer and highlighter.
Bronzer is used to create shadows and slim the appearance of the features it's put on. Commonly used on the crease, temple, sides of nose, cheekbones and jawline.
Highlighter is used to create the illusion of a larger, more prominent feature where it's put on. Commonly used on the browbone, nosebridge, chin, cupid's bow and cheekbones.
The purpose of contouring is to create depth and dimension using light and shadow. It creates the illusion of a more defined face that looks less flat. Hope this helped xo

Also make sure whatever you use to contour doesn't hsve too much shimmer, otherwise the "highlight" won't stand out as much. I use mac blush in blunt.

A way to add shape to your face when foundation can seem a bit overdone!
