Do you have dry skin? mix tour foundation with your moisturiser and apply it with your fingers in circular motions.. or you can apply it with a flat brush.

I personally don't like those flat kabuki brushes at all!!
I use a similar brush but its rounded on the top. And it looks like a stippling brush but double the size.
When I apply foundation on other people I spray the brush with a very lil amount of water. That let's your foundations glide on. (In my opinion)
As for sponges, there are a lot of people recommending the beauty blender but I've never tried it. I hear it works better when damp.
Ms. Jacqueline will probably tell you better.

Try different method, use tools such as latex sponge, stippling brush, powder brush, flat foundation brush, sea sponge, beauty blender or even your fingers (just sanitize first and you're good to go).
As rashi mentioned above, is it your skin being too dried. Try a moisturizing primer first before base application.
Don't forget to blend, blend and more blending to ensure good coverage.
