I've already got dark hair that was slightly violet for the first month or so. I was wondering what you'd recommend for wanting to dye my hair purple without bleaching? I'm thinking a couple jars of manic panic, but I want it to be slightly more permanent...

how dark is it? you might want it to fade out if you want a more vibrant effect when you dye it purple

Manic panic dyes all requires bleaching if you want the color to show up well (only vampire red will show up without bleaching if I'm not wrong) so I think bleaching is safer to not waste the manic panic dyes.

What I'm looking for is a more subtle purple. My hair is really very dark right now. What I'm searching is more a violet hue and shows up in the light, not a vibrant in your face purple. As much as I love that look, I need to get a decent job, so I figure if my purple is a bit more subtle it'll still be "alternative" ish without it freaking out people and creating unwanted prejudice.
I've used Manic Panic before on bleached hair, and it worked well for me except for the obvious fading over a few washes. I'm pretty good for washing my hair every 2 or 3 days, but I still want something that'll last a bit better than the semi-permanent stuff like Manic Panic...

I used to have dark brown hair and I put manic panic over it and I got that over all glaze and hue. Lots of Manic Panic would do the job you want! If you want more of a vibrancy, I'd do highlights or some bleaching before but yeah, you ccan get that hue with manic panic..

You could use the manic panic to tint the hair a little. Have you tried looking for a demi-permanent purple? I personally haven't seen to many vibrant colors in Demi or permanent but I would def. look for one you would probably get a better stain on the outer layer.

Have you considered the new Ion colors available at Sally's Beauty Salon (& elsewhere, I'm sure)? They have some fab colors and I don't think you have to bleach beforehand, unless you want them to really pop. I think this might be what you are looking for. Good luck!
