I recently ran into a problem I wasn't even aware could happen- with certain liners like gels or liquids, if you accidentally get the liner in the base of your lashes it can make your mascara turn out all weird so maybe that's the problem?

If the wand is already in the mascara when you open it, you'll need to wipe it clean before using. I find that helps otherwise invest in a lash comb or spoolie. There are plenty of mascaras out there that have defining wands.
