Try putting you hair into french braids. i usually do two, but obviously the more you do the tighter the waves. Hope this helped. :)

Ive tried to do two french braids an i couldnt focus since i did them right before i went to sleep. Im trying just two braided pig tails tonight to see how well that works. My hair, for some odd reason, will be all pretty and wavy, but then ill brush it and itll go right back to pin straight :(

Try adding an oil or serum to your hair this way it stays smooth so you wont really have to brush it out, just finger comb it.

Try using a deep hair waver - easy and gives consistent results. My hair is thin, so braiding is out of the question because it will look crimped no matter what.

Wash your hair and braid it in 4 braids before bed. My hair is naturally curly, but it gives me a defined wave by the morning.

It's a bit hard to explain, but what I do is after I've finished showering I twist my hair into several parts then pin it to my hair and wait for it to dry so that when it dries it's curly. i don't know if you understood that, but i hope it helps :)
