Good question. There are two things makeup artists can do to sculpt the face- highlighting and contouring. Contouring uses a shade slightly darker that the skin to recede it. For example, bronzer is applied to the hollows of the cheeks to give the appearance of a thinner face. Highlighting is just the opposite- you are using a shade slightly lighter than the skin to bring a certain feature foreword. For example, you could apply a highlight to the highs of your cheek bones to bring attention to them. When you highlight a feature, you are bringing more light to it, and thus drawing more attention to it. Below is an example of highlighting/contouring.

As for eyeshadow looks, what sort are you going for? Are you looking for a pop of color that will make a statement, or a natural look that just enhances your eyes?
