Only sometimes. I feel like people who don't need primers use them and it's just another layer of foundation. It depends on the primer and why you need it. Some examples:
•colour correcting - Victoria's Secret, Revlon etc.have coloured primers that will cancel out things like redness, veiny skin and all of the sort.
•Pore filling- any primers that shrink your pores by filling or blurring them out, for example toofaced and benefit sell some.
•Mattefying- for people with very oily skin that can't be controlled with just powder, this helps control the oils throughout the day, it's extra reinforcement. Amino genesis sells an amazing one.
•blurring- Blurs imperfections and scars, I feel like this is best for anyone with discolouration or patchy skin, as it sort of blurs the lines between two pores and helps your skin look more even in the long run, Revlon and smashbox have nice ones.
• general primers- these I feel are a little unnecessary, if your foundation is crap without a primer, you need a new foundation! Though I do like it for nights out when I will be sweating as it does provide that layer between my makeup and my pores.

I think only when you now its going to be a long day an its a special occasion...
For school then no, to me its just another product to buy.. But I do buy setting sprays but there not as much mula to spend ;)

You can always use ponds. it's not a primer but will leave your skin feeling very smooth and hydrated. works perfect when I put my mac mineral finish foundation.
