Doing my own nails has always been something I've kept at the back of my mind, but a dream I never seem to be able to realize. I wouldn't say I'm bad at doing my nails, but heck, they're far from professional! I see the way some of you lovely ladies craft your nails, and it's like art. Makes my attempts look like a child scribbling with crayon on a wall; it's really quite sad.

What are some tricks you'd suggest to having beautiful, healthy nails with great shape and great colour?

Hi Cici, first of all I wanna say don't feel like you're unskilled at all! I'm admittedly pretty bad at doing my nails, but as long as you have fun doing it, I think that's the most important part. So don't be discouraged :)
As far as nail tips go, I don't have many as I am a recovering biter. But I have had good luck with using glass files rather than traditional gritty ones to get even edges. And I've had good luck with the Nailtiques Formula 2, which is a protein treatment, to give some strength to my nails and help grow them if that's an issue you have. I've also seen posted on here that garlic is great for strengthening nails, and there are treatments with garlic that you can buy if you don't wanna smash garlic onto your fingers. Hope this helps!

Wow, Courtney, definitely! I hadn't really thought about different kinds of files, to be honest. I have a metal one that my grandmother gave me and that's been okay thus far. Growing my nails isn't necessarily an issue, but getting a good shape is DEFINITELY something I struggle with. I will take a look at all of your suggestions! Thanks so much for your tips!

I find a good cuticle butter works amazingly to strengthen my nails. I personally love lushs lemony flutter.

Since you said you're more concerned with shaping, you should think about what kind of shape you wanna have. If you want a square shape, I'd say get a straight nail clipper rather than using a traditional rounded one. Then if you want a more oval-square shape (is that a real shape? Haha) you can use your file to round off the corners. Or if you like to keep the natural roundness that your nails already have, a regular "half-moon" style of nail clippers should work best. I personally don't like using nail scissors because I can never get them to cut straight, but that's just me. And as Moya said, healthy cuticles are important too! I really like Lemony Flutter but the smell can be overwhelming if you don't like the scent of it. I got a Sally Hanson cuticle cream with apricot oil the other day, it comes in a little pot that I just throw in my purse and can reapply whenever. It isn't greasy at all, absorbs quickly, and isn't strongly scented.
