No, you can use purples, blues, greens to create a smokey eye look. It just doesn't have to be black. I was heavy into using a dark blue last year. The key is going from dark to light and blend,blend,blend.

Yes what Shelley said. you can use any color. just make sure you go from dark to light and really blend well.
