Hi Melissa,
I have been in this situation a lot lately and its been hard. 3 gigs went out of my hands simply because the clients thought I was not that good.
-First of all try to go around local bridal shops and ask them if you can leave your info there
-Secondly team up with some local or even other photographers saying you are looking to do more gigs and if they have anything to let you know. Then also leave your info there
-Thirdly you need to compare prices around in local beauty salons what are they charging for basic bridals and other events. I would charge at least $50.00 for bridals. Once you have done a good amount of bridals increase your fees slightly. I also recommend that you include travel fees. Gas is already expensive. Make a client contract basic one which states you will be providing services on this day, venue listed, number of people etc. Maybe you can do makeup for friends for free and get various pics of different ethnicity to show your skills. I would try and make some simple business cards. Try to send or mail info to local event planning agencies and include your prices. You never know they will get in touch with you. All of this is mostly marketing your services, talent, and skills. Besides that once you start doing shoots I usually charge by the hour, but I have not done many shoots. I would say starting $45.00 per hour or a flat fee 2 hours would be $175.00.
I hope this is helpful.
