I don't reccommend youtube... a good majority of "gurus" aren't actually working artists.
Practice your blending (its all about blending) your symmetry, and your makeup setup and hygiene
Practice on your friends, take some pictures, make a model mayhem account and link up with local models and photogs to start workong on a portfolio.
Apply to a makeup counter for experience :)
Start from there- also, when building your kit learn to separate what is yours and what will be strictly for clients, products, tools and brushes. These shouldn't be mixed.

If she finds someone reliable...
Most of the videos I've seen have been filled with a lot of misinformation.
I don't find youtube reliable.

I agree with Carolyn. I watch the videos on YouTube but I also have my own opinions and techniques. Certain people aren't even make up artists with clients so I wouldn't trust them. I went to school and got a job. It was slow at first getting clients but if you're good they'll see your talent and I've gotten amazing reviews and more clients from word of mouth. It'll always generally be slow at first until you build up a reputation. Just keep working at it and don't forget to use great products.

You can become certified by going to a school. You will build a portfolio and be eligible for pro discounts. This will also help you to build skills and learn new thing. Classes are as little at a few hours to month long courses. :). Where do you live? Are there schools/classes in your area?
