I actually spray it over my powder it makes it set in better I love it!! and it can do a variety of things the one I use is nyx matte and it keeps my makeup in place for about 10 hours I think it makes a difference

I had this fear a while back, I tried it without powder once and now I barely ever wear powder on top of my makeup for everyday makeup due to that cakey issue. I just top it up during the day. Only powder when I'm doing full on makeup.
Urban decay have a range of setting sprays- they are quite good but you need to keep them in your bags. Setting sprays set your makeup obv but some can make you look oily or just don't last as long as you would hope- makeup isn't a long term miracle. Try out a ud setting spray I use the oil control. It works for a few hours but after that I need to reapply. The spray will help your makeup to look more flawless and set it at the same time.
I suggest you try out a good setting spray which suits your skin type as an alternative to powder. Also use primer! Good luck. Xx

I use spray over powder also!! Makes the finish look incredible- with powder I usually use mac fix+!! Xx

Sorry I keep rambling- but also if you can't let go of powder I suggest using a duo fiber powder brush it will help your application to be less heavy therefore less cakey due to the bristles being at different lengths and also synthetic- real techniques do a brilliant and also affordable duo fiber set.

I have the same issue so I'm trying out sheerer more finely milled powders...still looking :(. Mac mist and fix isent a setting spray but a hydrating mist use it after you apply the powder and it helps takes away the cake look. if you have oily skin this may not be the best option. I'm going to take my own advise and give it a try again havent used it in a long time

I don't want to make any assumptions here but I know many women, myself included, wear liquid foundation followed by a powder foundation. Therefore you are doubling up on your foundation which can lead to a cakey kind of look. I switched to a tranclucent powder and it fixed the problem for me. Also when you apply the powder, use a beauty blender and use a gentle pat onto your skin so that will set the makeup application better then say applying powder with a fluffy brush all over the face.
