Braiding does work. You can do things like deep hair conditioning, leave in conditioners, wear protective hair styles and don't use to much heat in your hair. I recommend YouTube research

You could try the inversion hair method, its supposed to give good results although I don't know too much about it, maybe you could google it and see if it would work for you, its pretty easy :)
