I've been interested in locking my hair recently, as I think it looks beautiful. I'm trying to use the twist and rip method, but my hair is too smooth and flat to hold it. Any tips?? Also, what is the growth rate of dreadlocks? My natural hair is 22" now, and I'm really happy with it, but I know that your hair gets significantly shorter when you loc it. Do locs grow faster than normal hair? If so, how fast do they grow? Please respond, thanks!

My hair is locked up. The process shortened my hair by half. It takes a lonnnnnggg time for noticeable growth.
Tips: get a tiny crochet hook (I forgot the exact size I had) and weave the hair in and out of a dread, it creates internal knots and tightens tge core.
also, palm roll & try the clockwise rubbing method.

@Nichole, I do want dreadlocks, but I want the locs themselves to be long. Sorry for my rudeness. :) thank you girls! After some research, I've combined a few methods.

Thank you @Sarah M! I'm combing the twist&rip, back-comb, palm rolling, and natural methods. I'm also braiding a few sections. I don't want my locs to be very neat, and my hair is very straight, so I hope this method works for me. I've noticed that my hair keeps it's length when I use the twist&rip method.

I have a lot of hair, but very thin individual strands. My hair was semi-wavy and insanely soft. I did mine through the twist and rip method and have been letting them do their own thing ever since, rather than trying to keep them in a uniform shape. They look kind of funny right now, straight and pretty at the ends and then twisty and dishelved at the top. I rather like messy dreads. Also, you're going to look gorgeous with them.

I have quite thin, fine hair, but it can be quite messy and crazy. I'm using the same method as you, just letting them do their own thing. Thank you! Your locs look absolutely gorgeous on you :)

I don't want to sound rude or anything I'm just honestly curious; how do you wash your hair with dreadlocks?

Sarah M.
Awhhh, you're so sweet @Aisling!
@Lody You wash your hair with sulfate/residue free shampoo and work it in to your roots. When you rinse the shampoo travels down your locks and cleans the lengths.

Any time @Sarah :)
@Lody, it is best to use residue free shampoo, with no conditioners. You can work the shampoo in like you normally would, but be extra careful rinsing it out, and you can't scrub your hair. You can squeeze the soap out of the locs like little sponges :)

@Gabs, that looks beautiful! But I want to keep my locs as natural as possible (with a little help.) I've already started my dreadlocking process, and my hair isn't too much shorter, so I'm not bothered by it :) I've left quite a bit of loose hair too, which is also helping me to keep the length.
