Which lighting do you use for applying makeup in? What's your favorite lighting? I have extremely crappy lighting in my room and I have 3 girls and one bathroom in my house... So bathrooms a no go zone for me! I'm thinking of getting some cool white flurencent tube lights next to the mirror in my room... Thoughts?

Sunlight is the best. sit by a window, it gives perfect lighting!

My father's a photography by hobby and my boyfriend is going to school for film. I hear a lot about lighting and they don't recommend fluorescent because its harsh and true colors don't come through unless you have the proper light filters (which can be pricey). an alternative to sunlight would these specially designed lightbulbs that mimic the sun's natural light (I don't know the name for them but they aren't UV lights) these would apparently be best for make up because they give the most flattering, natural effect

Yeah that sounds good but I was told harsh lighting is good for makeup because that way you don't walk out side with an orange face! Which usually happens to me with my lighting in my room haha!

It depends. If you work or are under fluorescent lighting a lot, then yes you would use fluorescent lighting when you put your makeup on. So, you're not trying to guess what you'd look like at work. Luckily, I don't have to work under a lot of fluorescent lighting, so my lighting at home works great for me.

Jacqueline, what about placement? Is there a specific way to set up lighting to flatteringly light the whole face?

I agree with Caitlyn. I have horrible lighting too so I sit next to a window to do mine(:

So if not fluorescent lighting what specific lighting do you reccomend? Besides natural sunlight obviously :)

Oh my god I hate when I have to do my makeup in somewhere with like warm lighting where I look really good and then I have to go to school where it's those ugly bright lights omg I'm like nooo guys I promise I look good in normal lighting hahahaha I always ask the teachers if I can turn the lights out for class. this thread was really helpful!

Full spectrum bulbs cost a little more, but are worth every penny. I wish I had access directly beside the window while applying make up. I open blinds/curtains and use my full spectrum bulbs and that's the best I can do.
