I'm not the best with hair so sorry if I'm asking a dumb question! I've dyed my hair black for about 3 years now, I would love to go lighter, maybe to a light brown. Would this be possible without my hair being ruined? My hair is in pretty good condition now. Also, would something like colour before work for me?

I'd love something like that too, I do love having black hair but I've had it for so long now that I'm just bored :)

Only real way to lighten it is to either bleach it,or use a hair stripper. Both can be damaging though :/

I would really recommend both of you going to a professional. They can lighten your hair without causing all the damage that would occur if you bleached it yourself. Trust me, your hair is something you should invest in. I DIY bleached my hair a couple years ago and I kid you not, when I rinsed the bleach in the shower I pulled off a chunk of my hair. It's funny now but it took a year for it to even out lol

I'm planning to go to a professional either way, I also had a bad experience with bleach - it turned orange and was patchy! I also lost a lot of hair, never again would I do it myself haha. Most of the professionals here refuse to lighten black hair so I was just wondering if I could get it a little lighter before going to one. :)

Before getting my cosmetology license I would alway bleach my hair when I wanted to go lighter big mistake after going to school and getting my license I recommend going to a professional it may be pricey but you will get better result and they will know how yo treat your hair so it won't be as damaged.

I went to a professional today and she said she wouldn't bleach it. Looks like I'll just have to let it grow out :(

Most hairdressers are too scared to lighten a clients whole head of hair. They will recommend that you just go for highlights. And even if they do lighten all of your hair at once it'll turn orange and brassy. Especially because you've been dying it black for so long. So if you get lucky and find one that'll lighten all of it, it'll turn brassy and then you'll have to wait awhile before they lighten all of it again. Or you can gradually lighten it with highlights and then dye it the light brown.

Thanks Julia, blonde looks great on you! :)
Faith- Mine suggested highlights which I'd like to do I'm just not sure how they'd turn out. That sounds like a really good idea though, I think gradually lightening it with highlights would work best for me. Thankyou!
