I've heard good things about Manic Panic, Pravana Vivids, Splat, or Fudge Paintbox. I've never used them, but they are all highly recommended.

You'd have to lighten your own hair using bleach or another lightening product. When I had pastel colours in my hair I also started at dark brown and found that Shwartzkopft L1+ dyes seemed to work very well with less damage than bleach, after getting your hair to an orangy/yellow you should be able to dye it the colour blue or purple you want. :)

I always use the Prism Lites at Sally's. Honestly if you're doing dark blue or purple it won't be AS stressful on your hair and you can probably get away with using 30 Volume developer to get it brassy enough to put blue over. I'd totally recommend Manic Panic Shocking Blue, Midnight Blue, and Purple Haze or Ultra Violet for purple. :3.

PAUL MITCHELL INK WORKS!! I have dark brown hair and I use this as a toner for a deep purple. It is a professional product though sold at CosmoProf but you can probably find it online. I tried Pravana Vivids and it stained my bathtub as I rinsed it out as well as everything the water touched as it was rinsing out. Be careful with that shit :) have fun.

You don't need to lighten to tone your hair blue or purple.

Depending on what blue you chose, you have tto make sure you lift your hair enough that it won't turn green once you put blue over it. generally a pale yellow will do. purple is a lot easier to do. manic panic is great.

^^^ Agreed. Sorry but I still say lifting with bleach is your best bet if you want a true blue or purple. Just make sure you deep condition. ^.^

I only say that because it's too easy for that beautiful blue to turn a putrid, ugly green amd it's not pretty lol.

There's a really nice midnight blue from directions called..midnight blue lol, because its a darker shade of blue anyways you could lighten your hair and not worry about it turning green, but when you put the blue in your hair make sure your hair is a lighter shade than the blue cause if its darker than it will most likely just show up black.
