I have mixed hair texture. I am Puerto Rican, black, and Haitian. Quite a mix huh? Lol.

Anyways, I am going to Ulta and need some hair products for curl hair. The middle of my hair is dry and I need something that will moisturize and define that part of my head. The rest of my hair is fine I just need it more defined.

I don't like the crunchy feeling so with that being said, what are some good products Ulta sells that I can purchase. Price is not an issue! Give me what you got?

Tigi bed head?? Devacurl?? Ouidad??

Girl I got you! My mom has been a hair stylist for 32yrs I'm Portuguese and Jamaican. I use 100% argan oil first then Moroccan oil curl cream. I use a diffuser on my blowdryer turn my head upside down will drying till its completely dry. Finish with hair spray! This will define and hold curl. While leaving the hair soft to touch. Good luck!

Ouidad is supposed to be really good for curly hair, I would also try Mixer Chicks, dunno if that's in Ulta though.

I agree with everything MsDiva said. I've tried the ouidad products, they're nice, but weren't good enough for me. I'm black and swedish, and like you, the middle of my head is dry, while the rest is fine and doesn't need much product. The ouidad products did nothing for my dry part, and the gel wasn't strong enough to define my curls without getting frizzy and poofy :/ but it deff doesn't leave your hair crunchy, so that's a plus.

I don't know how long you've been straightening your hair or with what (flat iron or chemical base) but your entire head of hair is zapped of moisture. If you're trying to go natural and see your curl pattern come out you're not going to find the needed products at ULTA. I'm a natural curly and mixed as well and I don't use anything for my hair from ULTA. First off hairspray is death for a natural curly. It contains alcohol. There is nothing beneficial in that stuff whatsoever. The reason why you aren't seeing defined curls is because your hair has been straightened for so long it has been trained on nothing but so to bring it out you hair needs moisture. I straightened my hair (flat iron) for several years before going natural and my texture looked exactly like yours when I put the heat down.

For cleansing I suggest using As I Am Coconut Cowash. This stuff is my HG and I will not stray on this one. Its a non-suds cleanser that is free of nonsense. It infuses moisture and it smells super yummy.

After cleansing your hair needs a leave-in conditioner. As I Am Leave In Conditioner. Another HG item in my stash. Love it because its light but yet really sinks into hair. Applied in sections from root to tip.

Styler...I usually reach for a light hair butter that has a light consistency from Camille Rose Naturals but since its much cooler now I've been using her hair butter which is much thicker. Applied in sections as well from root to end this stuff of clock full of nutrients that hair needs and it doesn't leave behind that nasty grease ball look too. And once your curls come back this stuff will also enhance their look with shine.

Sealant...used to lock in all that delicious goodness you just applied to your hair. I used just a small amount (about quarter size) of coconut oil to my hair. I apply in sections. Do not get heavy handed with it and with the length and thickness you have I would use about a nickle amount.

As I Am line can be found at Sally's online and in-store. Camille Rose Naturals online as well and on her website she is gearing up to have a 25% sale soon so its worth checking out. The coconut oil can be found at any health food store. I've using both lines for awhile and my hair loves it. Before I forget at least once a month you will want to clarify your hair with a sulfate free shampoo and deep condition at least twice a month (anything that is curly girl friend that doesn't contain 'cones will be fine).

I've just got some white girl hair but I noticed no one mentioned Carol's Daughter. Isn't that supposed to be really good?

OMGG I'm Haitian too :)

@Bree...Carol's Daughter is ok. I've used it in the past but it did nothing much for my hair. And her deep conditioner is so deeply saturated with fragrance I had to return it because it flared up my husband's asthma real bad.

Revamping suggestions:

I'm just going to second the As I Am Cowash as I looooove it, need to by some more actually...I bought it off of a coworkers recommendation and it's been my go to co wash since.

I tried Deva Curl products and wasn't that impressed. I've got kinky black girl hair but my curls love thick cremes and butters to keep them moisturized and coconut oil/evoo to keep that moisture sealed in. I haven't put heat or spray can anything near my hair in a year and my curls are defined every time I wash them (I've got right category 3b/4a curls though). I use goddess curls shampoo once a week or every other week (sulphate free, which if your trying to get your curls to pop sulphate free shampoos are a good idea) and co wash twice a week or as needed (like when I try a new product and my hair doesn't like it). The most moisturizing leave in conditioner I've hsed so far is Giovanni's Direct 50/50 leave in conditioner. My hair loves the stuff and it keeps me moisturized for awhile.

I've tried Shea moisture products for my hair and they don't do much of anything for my hair at all.

I second what Shelley is saying. this is what I have just learned to do and it works awesome! finally something that works! I'm Brazilian, Jamaican, Dutch and Irish. your hair looks a lot like mine did. I also straightened. this works well. the trick is to figuring out how much product to use. once you learn that, your hair will not only look awesome, it will thank you!

I do the same thing as MsDiva. I use a shampoo and conditioner with Argan oil in it as well. It's recommended to only shampoo your hair once a week too, since curly hair easily dries. I am mixed as well. Vietnamese, Black, Mexican and Iranian. I know your struggle. Lol the Ouidad Climate Control works pretty well also. Good luck! 😊

My sister has hair like yours and she uses this stuff and it works really good for her, I don't think its to expensive either.

I am mixed with Black And White, and I highly suggest Shea moisture products! Also, there are a few books that I do believe will help you out as much as they did for me! One is Teri LaFlesh's curly like me, and the other is Curly Girl by Lorriane Massey, 'Curly Like Me'!! These books literally saved my hair!I highly suggest you read them because there is so much information that I can't tell you on here! Good Luck!

Tried Shea moisture with the yellow packaging, I do not like it, It made my hair dry. my hair is really thick and long and super dry and frizzy. lol there are no luscious locks here. I'm native American and black. it's so hard to find a curly hair product that works for everyone's needs. I will try as I am.

Nov 21, 2013

Shelley W.

@Cyrenna...you should've tried the one in the pink packaging. The one in the yellow did the same thing to my hair as well. The only thing I don't like from the Shea Moisture line is the shampoos. They are sulfate free but they sure did tangle up my hair something fierce and it dried it out.

I myself have thick curly hair when younger I relaxed so many times & always straightened it I have been embracing my curls as well trying to stay away from straightening so much. It's a process took me a while ouidad products were my favor but I guess they stopped working as they use too. I still use but not as often. I tried deva curl wasn't a fan. Started using the As I am co wags & As I am leave in conditioner for curly hair, Shea moisture cream & they work wonders. I found my #1 products that are amazing & natural Kinky curl the best curly hair products I have ever tried. Harmon's & target carry them I absolutely live the spiral spritz got my curls back & I love. Also treatments coconut & castor oil. Don't wash everyday & you can always try the no shampoo just conditioner.. Try avoiding heat if you want straight once in a while just straighten w/o heat.. Here's a pic of my hair now I usually diffuse just try sum of these products see which ones work better for your hair..

Wow , thank you all so very much. All the information I received is very informative. I really appreciate it.

One question though, what exactly is a co wash? Do I was my hair like how I would do if I was shampooing my hair? And will the co was cleanse my scalp?

Nov 22, 2013

Phylicia V.

@ Shelley, I tried as I am curling gel but I didn't like it because it made my hair very crunchy but I never tried the co wash and the leave in conditioner. I will definitely purchase that and try it. Sallys have a great return policy just in case I don't like it for some reason.

Thank you so much for explaining to me the steps that's needed and backing that up with description. :)
