Hey there :-) was wondering if there's any way to remove colour or lighten black-dyed hair.. I've had countless bad experiences with hair dressers, had a "rebounding" permenant streightening done about a year ago... which burned the crap outta my hair:-( which left me with brittle- (and yup-still curly!) hair. so I am now in the process of "no heat no products no chemicals" on my hair which I don't quite enjoy... and I've got black hair with light brown roots! it looks hillarious... any ideas?

Pretty much anything that's going to remove the black is going to damage your hair. Black hair dye is very difficult to remove, and products like color oops will make your hair more damaged, and will require you to dye your hair again as it will lighten it up. I took red out of my hair with it and my only saving grace was how thick it it was to begin with. As much as you hate hair dressers, save yourself some heartbreak and use one if your hair is already damaged. The process to remove the dye will be minimized in their hands.

If your hair is damaged already, color oops will KILL it. Use a clarifying shampoo for a few weeks to get the bulk of the black out before doing anything! black just has to wash out a couple months before lightening. Sorry :/

Ok. I'm going to break this down for you.
I had been box dying my hair for about 5 years at the time. I used natural instincts.
Well, the day came that I was ready for a change. I went from salon to salon trying to get someone to help me. No one would touch my hair because of all the box dye I put on my hair. So I went to Sally's and bought every color remover you can think of... Nothing. Maybe... MAYBE one shade lighter.
BOX HAIR DYE AND HENNA both have something called metallic salts, which coat your hair more and more each time you dye. Then when the time comes hat you want a change, its freaking painful to get it out.
You HAVE GOT to go to salon. I beg of you.
It's will take time.. It will take extra $$. But if you want it done right and you don't want to melt your hair off, you have to break down and go to a pro.
I'm with you, I HATED going to salons cuz they would never listen to me.
I'm telling you tho, do your research about all the places in your area. Read their reviews, find out what some of their specialties are. Call them and discuss what you want done. ASK THEM SPECIFIC QUESTIONS. If they can't answer it's prolly cuz they don't know, so I would move on and try to find someone else. Find some one who won't do it all in one day. If they want to stretch out your sessions over time, that's a good thing cuz they are trying to preserve your hair.
Also, find a place that does THE BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT. OMG! This thing changed my life!
Some people get hypey about it and the formaldehyde thing, but again, do your reaearch and you'll find out why it's used and why it won't hurt you.

I used to dye my hair black with box dye in high school. It was already fried from my amateur attempts to straighten my hair, and since I didn't want to wreck it anymore, I ended up leaving it alone and growing my hair out, gradually cutting the black strands away. It took forever and because of that I refuse to dye my hair anymore. Good luck.

Well I'm a hairstylist so trust me when I say never dye your hair black! Go for dark brown and use a Demi perm. Were women!! We change our mind about our hair all the time! Black never comes out ull have to grow it out :( or let it fade and slowly you can go lighter.

The reason why things like the vinagar, baking soda, lemon juice, honey things aren't going to work is because your hair is not virgin hair.
Those things CAN lighten virgin or already lightened hair, but not hair that has been dyed darker. That goes back to the part about the metallic salts coating and coating and coating your hair.

Thankyou all for your comments I did not expect to be flooded with by many responses!
'round here where I live there are no hairdressers I can trust... they're all way too full of themselves and lack the knowlege and sensitivity to something as basic as my hair quality!
am trying to stay away from chemicals so as tempting as color oops sounds- going to have to wait till my hair stops breaking under every single touch...
Whitney- you are amazing thankyou for your advice!I will definitely reconsider, thankyou so much for your caring comments! X
