Where the camera I use is the Olympus Pen Mini which is like a step up from compact and a step down from DSLR (in the middle of the two). I do the same thing where I just crop the eyes from a full face picture. I select a camera setting that allows the biggest picture as well.

I have digital camera but the best photos of mine were taken on daylight, so....if you have a chance go to the balcony, or yard and take photos there. (even with cell phone, daylight is the best) :) sunlight rocks :D
