I was horrible at eyeliner until I picked up the lorac liquid eyeliner and did exactly as Velen stated, gentle strokes. Don't try to swipe a line across your eyes really fast, take your time with a steady hand and begin with slow strokes. Comes out perfect for me every time now :)

Try felt tip pen eyeliners they are less messy then brushes and much easier to use for beginners

Try a gel liner and an angle eyeliner brush. I didn't start off with one but I can see why people prefer it. Using the angle eyeliner, first line the eyes without doing a wing. Make sure it's thickets on the outer edge than the inner corner. Next, to create the flick, use the angled liner to continue the line upward from the outer corner of your lower lash line. This creates a more balanced line for left and right eye because you're just following the natural shape of your eye.

For a drugstore gel liner, try maybelline's eyestudio lasting drama gel eyeliner or the loreal infallible gel liner. For a higher end brand, try stila's smudge pot or tarte's emphaseyes waterproof clay liner.
