The key to the perfect smoky eye is proper blending. Colors to have blend together seamlessly to prevent a harsh look. Make sure you graduate rich or dark colors to lighter or less saturated colors. In other words, go dark to light. The eyeliner determines the success of your entire application. Apply a black, dark brown or charcoal liner thickly and very closely to the lash line on the upper lid. Take a small eye shadow brush and smudge the line so there is no hard edge. Make a much finer line along the lower lashes and smudge the same way.
I use three colors to give my smoky eye great visual depth. Apply the lightest shade from the crease upward onto the brow bone. I usually use a soft cream or ecru color for this step. Next, cover the lid only with a medium brown (try a rich camel tone) and blend it up into the crease. Finally, use a very dark brown at the lash line and blend it up onto the lid. Next, take a bit of the brown shadow and place if underneath your lower lash line and blend so you get a nice diffusion. Now, stop and step back and take a look: Can you see where one color begins and the next ends? If you can, keep blending. The transitions need to be seamless. Last but not least, apply a few coats of mascara or a set of false lashes, and you've got yourself a smokey eye. You did a great job for your first time! The only thing you can do is keep trying different techniques and seeing how they can transform your face! Watch some youtube tutorials.
