A smokey eye is defined as a dark color close to the lash line with is gradually getting lighter towards the brow bone.
The easiest way I found is to place a dark brown on the lid, a lighter brown in the crease and then a skin colored on the brow bone. And blend blend blend! Blending is key in smoky eyes because its supposed to be gradual. Then as a last step smudge eyeliner on the lash line and blend it into the lid color. Hope that helps.

I simple way is to get three eye shadow colors. A lighter color for the inner corner a medium one for all over the lid and a darker one for the outer corner of your eye to blend into the medium color.
