Purple ombré hair

I have this crazy idea to get purple hair without bleaching it. I have semi orange brownish hair from using a red hair lift. And I was wondering if I could use a dirty blond hair lift and then using purple manic panic for the ombré effect. Would this idea work? I think this is really confusing.
