Village women in Turkey use them all the time, much baggier though. They wear long shirts and put these over them to avoid getting dirty when working around the house. They usually come in pretty colours with flower patterns :)

Ah the letter got messed up. It's an s with a cedilla underneath, but I guess typing salvar should do it.
