It's a way to shade and shape your face to make it look slimmer and you can make things look smaller like your nose, or cheeks. The dark is contouring and the light is highlighting.

It can add a bronzey look to your face as well as creating shadows to make your face and nose appear slimmer. :)

You can do it with a small brush, an angles brush. Any brush that will help make a clean line and define what you want to define
