Volunteer for everything you can. local theater groups could be a good place to start. some community colleges will offer theater make up classes and I highly recommend taking one if you can. it will give you some good skill habits and teach you the basics of face shaping. once you feel likeyouve mastered techniques on your own face branch out and try it on your friends.
sites like mpdel mayhem are helpful at building your portfolio too.

Congratulations on having a goal and seeking to meet it! Best of luck to you!
I've been doing this 20 years and my suggestions would depend on what area of makeup you want to get into, so this is more generalized since I don't know that...
-Work on a counter/Sephora etc. This will help you gain experience/practice and build your kit at a discount. It will also tie you to a brand while you are there.
-Practice on every human being you can, as many ages and ethnicities as possible, skin types too.
-Build a portfolio. Work ONLY with photographers and models whose work is good enough to show to an agency. If your work isn't good enough to get these jobs yet, work with the best you can until it is. Look at the photos of other artists who are agency repped as a standard.
-If your local rec center or community college offers classes in drawing, art or photography, take classes if you can. These will enhance your makeup skills more than you can imagine!
-Network. Find out who the artists are in your area who are booking the most work and offer to buy them coffee or a meal and pick their brains. Assist if you can. Give your card to every person you meet EXCEPT while assisting.
-Read. Every book on makeup you find. I'd start with Stage Makeup by Corson and The Makeup Artist's Handbook. Start a photo morgue to inspire you.
-Start building a kit. Don't start doing makeup until you have the tools to do so.
-If you're not already there, move to LA or NY, maybe Miami or Chicago. If you don't, plan to work 2 jobs.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Hi Brandon!
I would say enrolling in a makeup school is definitely the way to go! Not only will you learn makeup application, but its history, sanitation process and how to make it in the industry! Here at CHICSTUDIOS, you will learn how to make a portfolio, resume and social media! Also, we offer a CHIC COMMUNITY for grads like hiring fairs with Sephora and Macy's, among others, and pro workshops! Whether it is CHICSTUDIOS or another makeup school, I definitely think getting a license is the way to go! :) Hope that helps!!

Practice, work with jobs that has to do with the beauty industry, build a portfolio, and network you don't exactly need to go to makeup school but if you want to go to school then do cosmetology so you can get a license but most makeup artists didn't really go to makeup school.
