Usually the ones you see at the grocery or drug store are more flimsy than acrylic nails so they are easier to clip. You could use scissors or nail clippers but for a more acurate and precise cut I'd use an acrylic nail clipper.

I dont see why you shouldnt be able to clip them. When nail salon glue tips on your nails they cut and file them down to your likeing

Mrs. N the same nails you purchase in the grocer or drug store are much like the nails you get put on at a nail salon...PLASTIC. Some hold up a little better because they don't have acrylic overlay on them and are suppose to last at least a wk to 10 days making application and price more convenient than acrylic nails. I'm not sure where you're located but you can find an acrylic nail clipper online and if you need some leads I can definitely post them for you. As well you can use scissors or a large nail clipper, but I prefer the acrylic nail clipper because it's more precise.
Also, perhaps you should search for shorter ones that don't have designs on them but either come nude or w/ a basic french manicure. There are tons of brands that offer shorter more active lengths for people who don't like long nails.

you can definitely clip them, it's usually just difficult to get the shape that you want, they can cut a little funny because they are plastic.
Like others were saying, it is a lot easier to use an acrylic clipper, you can get them at sallys beauty supply or any other beauty supply store, makes it super easy to clip them and get the perfect shape
