To intentionally damage the American flag, even for something like cute shorts, is extremely disrespectful. The flag is a symbol of our nation and the values upon which it was founded; any damage or malicious act toward the flag is an affront to the country, to those values, and to the millions of citizens serving our country to defend the flag and all that it represents.

Using individual fabrics to construct that pattern on the shorts is totally fine. Just don't buy a real flag and chop it up.
