Lotions are generally less hydrating because they usually are a water base.

Lotion. Body butter feels thick and seems to take forever to soak in. Organic, cold pressed extra virgin coconut is my preferred method of hydrating my skin, but it's not always practical when you're out and about. I love love love C. Booth's vanilla lotion. *swoon* Smells like cupcakes! :) (They also make an unscented and it's not expensive) Lotion is also nice for putting a little something in to give a glow to your skin. Butter may leave streaks if you did that and were not extremely careful.

Am I crazy for never noticing a difference?

For me I think they're both the same..

The only difference I notice, Lara, is in the ease of application and amount of time it takes to soak in. They both feel smooth and soften. But I actually am kinda/sorta crazy, soooo buttermilk and Beethoven! :P.
