I cut my nails straight across then file the sides and across to make a squoval shape. I keep my nails shorter and this helps me with strength and polish wear.

As a former nail tech student we learned you should cut your nails straight across but not too close to the skin on the sides as it will cause ingrown (that little tag of skin you people like to pull or bite on). Also, when filing your nails never file back and forth because that will cause your nails to become weak and brittle. File each side inward (left side inward, right side inward). Note: this will not give you sharp squared off edges but it will prevent your nails from breaking. I hope this helped.
