You can get it cut shorter! A bob, a-line, or pixie cut would be a great change, but watch out if its a high-maintenance style, and you could get tired of it if you can't change it from day to day (some short cuts, you can change it up) but they grow out faster than you realize! And your hair isn't too long that you would have reservations on cutting it off.

I got my hair permed a while ago (had it as a kid and loved it). But they totally messed it up. It was to the point that I was pulling wads of hair out and I could never brush it (almost 3 months after). I got pissed and chopped it off. It was bad. I went to the hairstylist and the only way that it could be saved was to do an angled cut. Long on one end, short on the other. I could still wear it in a pony (with a CRAP load of bobby pins at first). There could also be a feather or color added to the underside of the longer side.
