So I know a lot of girls have set prices when doing makeup. For example, they would charge a bride $75-$100 and a bridesmaid $50. How do you charge? Do you provide foundation or ask the client to bring their own? I would really appreciate your feedback cuz I'm stuck!

I'mm not entirely sure for pricing but I would definitely ask them to bring their own foundation.

Shauna is that what you do?

Jareka I just find it so difficult to have foundation for so many different skin colors and types.

I don't really do freelance makeup, although I want to but I just don't have the money to buy all these products. I've read many topics on this before though and everyone says to get the client to bring their own foundation, then you would supply everything else. I think it would be a huge waste of money to start buying all these different shades of foundation, since everyone's skin is different just ask them to bring their own. And also a lot of people's skin can't tolerate some makeup brands which is why it's better for them to bring a brand they like.

Gen do you provide foundation as well?

You should have all shades of foundation in your kit and use a q tip when dipping in the foundation.

@ shuna s. It doesn't just have to b foundation for somebody skin to tolerate it.. It could b any make product from brand

I also agree with @ mookey b.

Yeah I agree, II just find that foundation is waaaay more of a personal preference compared to eye makeup, etc. And it's hard to please everyone in what kind of coverage they want in their foundation. Like for me personally my skin can't tolerate high end foundation at all (Mac, urban decay, etc) which is what most makeup artists use, but like I said it's your own personal preference for how much you're willing to spend and how much you want to charge.

@Gen Mostly like quinceañeras, proms, weddings, etc. @Mookey I deff agree. I personally wouldn't charge $100 unless I'm going to he re-touching the bride all night during her wedding but I know I personally would never pay that much for makeup (probably cuz I will do my own). I just know girls who do charge that much and I wanted to know what they provided.

You should have foundations especially if you may have to make a shade and you need to price fairly as in what are you worth what can you do and make sure you have a portfolio that shows your work and also set up a date to get familiar with the clients face a trial run and question what they're looking for.I did a wedding and charged the bridesmaids $ 40.00 mind you it was a big party of 7 or 8 bridesmaids and plus as I was doing there makeup other people from the wedding wanted me to do their makeup also so I did that too and had a great day full of money :-D but worth the 5am wakeup and the happy faces from everyone.

For those who do provide foundation, what if the client says its not their right shade and you have nothing else? Has that ever happened to you guys?

Jun 10, 2013

Marlene R.

And what foundation brand do you guys provide?

You shouldn't tell them to bring their own foundation. You really only need to own three shades. An ivory, mid tone, and chestnut. You can mix your shades to match your brides complexion.

I feel like having them bring their own would be way easier, but depending on how much you are charging you shouldn't. I know a lot of people will just have foundations in a few different shades and you can mix them to get another shade, and that is how we did it in makeup school to. I have been trying to figure this out myself and I think the best way to go would probably be the mixing way but go ahead and suggest to them maybe bringing their own makeup and explain why (skin types, tones, reaction, ect).

With the mixing you usually get the lightest light, the darkest dark, and two or three in betweens. and you can get little additives to help make a little lighter or darker (like for me using the lightest light we still had to add a white additive to lighten it more), and you might have to mix two shades and still do an additive. also banana cream is good to add with darker foundations.

You should have the foundation, and give them the freedom to bring their own in case they want a special one. I think 100 is way too much if you don't have a VERY good understanding and at least one good certificate too. If I want my makeup done by someone else I look for someone who charge fair prices, for example if they only use higher end make up it's fair to charge a bit more :)

Mookey, I don't know if your comment has to do with what I said about banana creams in darker foundation or not, but if so, the banana cream doesn't necessarily add yellow but brings a glow. That is interesting though, I have never heard of anyone having an orange undertone, I will have to keep that in mind. Sucks the only thing you can find is that one covergirl makeup :(

Jun 10, 2013

Mookey, have you tried foundations with cool (pink) undertones or just warm (yellow)? From what I am reading (wanted to go look into it) orange and pink undertones are classified into the same group. I am sure you have probably looked into it yourself, but just in case, I thought I would let you know.

A client should never have to bring anything, though you should allow it if they say they prefer to use their own due to breakouts. Professional makeup artists should have 10 or more different foundations to match your client from, Bobbi Browns book says your kit should include at least 15 to start. and mixing colors to find their color is fine.

I'd highly suggest you providing the foundations. I'd be paying to get a full face of makeup done, not halfway done. that's part of being a freelance makeup artist.
