Macadamia healing oil. I dyed my hair 2 toned and my hair is reletively healthy and I use it to prevent any damage and to correct any that is there. it seriously makes my hair sooooooo soft. and you can get the 1 oz one at ulta for $15 and it lasts a while. just alittle and start with your ends to your scalp. that's what I personally do.

But, even though you don't want to do "the chop" it always makes your hair healthier in regard to damage. I went short and let my hair grow back healthy and my fine, brittle hair has came back stronger and is more full. so even though you don't want to it could be a good last resort. best of luck :)

What I do is when I have a day to myself I put just reaguler conditioner in my hair and put a shower cap on and leave it in as long as I can. That helps with my hair. :)

^ This is what I've done since I bleached my hair, its helping a lot.
My hair was really thin and course but now its a lot thicker.
Don't cut your hair short, its the worst thing ever. I had really long hair then cut it short and no matter what I do its taking years to get long again.
And I can't even go to the hairdresser for a trim because the idiots cut a good 2-3 inches off everytime when I literally want a few cms off so it just defeats the purpose of trying to grow my hair out.

For repair, use essential oil conditioning treatments like pro naturals moroccan argan oil hair mask once a week and get regular trims to prevent split or damaged ends. Try not to use heat or dyes on your hair either! You can also massage your scalp once a week with coconut oil, almond oil or argan oil to help stimulate health and growth, and leave in the oil for about 30-50 minutes to let it sink in and work. This kind of thing is very repairing.

Oh also, after you shampoo your hair, massage a big blob of honey from your roots to your ends, leave for a few minutes then wash out and use conditioner.
I do this once a week and it makes my hair extremely smooth.
